That's a really horrible thing to say Termie. Maybe they speak Polish because they can't speak English? I mean, if yourself and your Ailise or whatever her name is, say head of to live in France or somewhere and you go to the shops and start speaking English to each other, does that mean you're not trying to integrate? Regardless of whether you speak French or not, you're not suddenly going to speak French with an English speaking person while in France!

well there definately seems to be a growing discontent with cosmopolitan ireland.I always thought Ireland is a xenophobic country. maybe its because we gone from having almost no foreigners to loads within such a short space of time.Compared to the u.k and u.s. which was a more incremental influx

If I go to france or spain or any other country I will and do make every effort to communicate in the language as a matter of courtisy to the people. If I make a total fool of myself then so be it but at least I try so that little chestnut dosent work with me.
And you know bloody well it`s Alseir.

i have nothing against an entire race, generalising realy gets me.
i dont consider myself superior to any peoples.
i never use someones race, religion or colour as a source of abuse if im fighting with someone.

i have laughed at jokes at that uses sterotypes as the the punchline

i am not racist, and i dont mind me being irish/dub/white being usedagainst me in jest so long as it is not done with the intention of hurting me.

Don't know about you lot but I'm amazed at Kazobel's candor, courage and honesty and I think he should be applauded for that.

I'm following this thread with great interest and one salient thing that struck me about Kaz's remarks is the link between racism and consciousness. Kaz tells us that:

At the time I was blissfully unaware that what I was saying were racist remarks and it wasn't until it was pointed out to me over mail (and proper order to) that I realised they were racist comments. Now I've never considered myself racist but obviously I am to some degree and all weekend I've been thinking about it and why I found it acceptable behaviour.

I guess that unacceptable attitudes, racist or otherwise, are encoded in all of us to some degree. We are conditioned in that way by our upbringing and cultural background and we become increasingly blinkered as we grow older.

I suppose the challange is to become aware of our own 'shadow-side' and real growth involves an increase in consciousness and that can be very difficult and painful.

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura
ché la diritta via era smarrita.

Cheers all

I think it is very easy to say Mea Culpa.

It is harder not to end up doing the same thing again so I would wait til I see what happens over a couple of weeks maybe.

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.

Ah me! how hard a thing it is to say
What was this forest savage, rough, and stern,
Which in the very thought renews the fear.

So bitter is it, death is little more;
But of the good to treat, which there I found,
Speak will I of the other things I saw there.

I cannot well repeat how there I entered,
So full was I of slumber at the moment
In which I had abandoned the true way.

Racist/xynophobic whatever, everybody knows what I mean, stop being fucking pedantic you know full well what I'm talking about

But with regards to the insults the other night, you cant really claim not to know wjhat yopu were doing.

I never did claim not to know what I was doing, I knew I was insulting him and I knew I was using the fact that he was French to do it, what I said was it never occured to me that what I said was racist.

It's such a thin line between being racist and what is perceived as racism. I think everyone one is capable of it. PC has gone to the dogs.

I never used to think I was racist but in the last while I am beginning to think that I might be slightly.

I get the 38 and 39 bus to and from work and hand on my heart whenever anybody is on the phone or just talking to their friend 80% of the time they are speaking in a foreign language..Now I know that Dublin 15 has a huge proportion of different nationalities living there so I suppose the buses that I get would have more than the average of these nationalites.

In the last few months there are tons of Roma Gypsies on the bus every morning and evening shouting and roaring and playing their tinny folk music on their mobiles. It has gotten to the point where I really dread seeing any roma gypsies cos in my experience it is always a negative experience wheter they are begging for money from me, spitting on the bus, slapping their kids, trying to pickpocket people getting off the bus etc..

Now I know Irish people are just guilty at doing this but I find that every time I see a Roma Gypsy one of these things is happening
