When I lived in San Francisco during the Summer of 1996 (on my J1) I learned about Harvey Milk. He was the first openly gay male city representative in the USA, and together with Mayor George Moscone was gunned down in 1978. There were riots in SF when the killer got off relatively lightly. There is a plaza where the MUNI tram stops at Castro named after him.

Sean Penn is a brilliant actor - he'll do the role justice.

It is great to see that Harvey Milk is being recognized for his work - One day I think he will have the same recognition as MLK.

The film "Milk" about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay male politician in the USA in the 1970s, will be released in the USA on November 26th. The trailer for the film has been released, here is the link:

Sean Penn, who plays Harvey Milk, seems excellent in this trailer - which was to be expected becuase Penn is easily one of the finest actors of his generation. The cute James Franco plays Milk's lover and partner. Can't wait for the film to come out.

Proberly cos he is a little bit nice looking.

Fantastic movie. Surely one of the class of 2008 and a great performance by Penn.

Had such high hopes for this film and came away disapointed. Its all a bit gay politics by numbers and completely sentimental. The main relationship with Penn/Franco just doesnt feel real. Its well acted and directly competently but I just expected more. Its no Brokeback Mountain!

I don't think it's trying to be Brokeback Mountain. Perhaps going in with that expectation hampered your view a bit. I'm really looking forward to this movie.

You're complaining that a film about a gay politician involves gay politics? Did you expect a soft-porn Andy The Plumber Slips and Lands on His Wrench IV ?

I am looking forward to seeing it. He was an amazing man and us gays could do with a hero like him today, especially in the US.

I think that's the working title of Obama's film biography, due out 2020.

Its disapointing. Im comparing it to Brokeback Mountain because that was the last gay Hollywood film that made any impact. This one wont. Its way too simplistic and forgettable.
